A Soul Laid Bare - part 2 - Bree Despain

Tonya blinked. Her eyes had only been closed for a fraction of a second—only a single heartbeat—but when she opened them, the man loomed right in front of her. Only a few inches away.

Tonya jumped back in shock and hit the library cart behind her. Books spilled out onto the ground. She grabbed the edge of the cart to steady herself. She tried to shout, but her throat felt like it was closing in on itself.

She was trapped between the cart and this man.
He glared at her—his eyes black as two obsidian stones. “You have something I need.” His voice echoed in Tonya’s ears as he reached his large hand out toward her. “I need your help…”

***
“Sami?” a deep voice asked.

“Wha…?” Sami sat up with a start. She knocked a book off the desk in front of her. Wait, what desk? “Where am I?”

“Um . . . the library,” that deep voice said.

“Library?”

Sami looked at the guy standing beside her. His white oxford shirt-sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, exposing his mocha colored forearms. He smiled. Dylan Harris, Sami realized. She’d spent too many hours staring at that perfect smile from across the lunchroom to not recognize it—even if her brain was still in a fog.

“Pretty intense nap, huh?” Dylan made a wiping motion next to his mouth. “Might want to…um…”

Heat rushed into Sami’s cheeks. She wiped the corner of her mouth. Of course she’d been drooling in her sleep in front of Dylan.

But the thing is, Sami could have sworn she hadn’t been asleep. One second she’d been watching TV after school…at home…and the next she was here.

“Sorry to bug you, but the library is closing. Didn’t want you waking up here all alone.”

Alone.

Sami suddenly remembered her dream: The young librarian with the books. The man at the desk. His black, black eyes. The two of them in the library—alone. Only it hadn’t felt like a dream at all. It was like Sami had actually been living a day in the woman’s life…Tonya, yes, that had been her name. Sami could even feel the tender spot on her skin where she’d spilled hot coffee on herself in the dream.

This wasn’t the first time in the last week Sami had dreamed—experienced—the same scenario. Only this time she’d woken in the library where the dream had taken place.

“Interesting reading.” Dylan scooped up the book Sami had knocked from the table. “Colonial Witchcraft?”

“I don’t remember picking that out.” But she had seen it before. It was one of the books the woman in her dream had been carrying from her car. “I need to go.”

“I’ll walk you out,” Dylan said. “Do you need a ride home?”

Normally, Sami would have freaked out about Dylan Harris asking to drive her home, but the fact that she had no idea whether she’d driven here herself was freaking her out even more.

Most of the library lights had already been turned out, and it was even darker beyond the windows. Sami stopped short next to a small display filled with flowers surrounding the picture of a woman—who seemed hauntingly familiar.

“I heard it’s the ten year anniversary of her death,” Dylan said. “Strange how they never figured out how she died.”

Sami swallowed hard. She looked at the nameplate on the framed picture of the woman. Librarian, Tonya Sellers.

“I think I may know,” Sami said before she could stop herself. _______________________________________________

Hmmm, I was wondering how the first story was going to turn into YA, and now I know! It seemed like Tonya was not a librarian in the first part, that she'd come from "the office", but it's not important. I like this Dylan character, he seems sweet despite is status. This part was definitely a little creepy with the books already picked out for her. I'm looking forward to Sami figuring out Tonya's story.
